My Word of the Year DIY // The Creative Collective #1
January 21, 2014
As some of you may now, if you read THIS post, I decided to join in on The Creative Collective. This is a creative challenge as well as a linkup on Melyssa's blog.
The first prompt is:
Think of a word that you want to focus on in 2014.
Find a piece of paper, cardboard, old pizza boxes, whatever, and write your word out. You can include photos, magazine clippings, paint splotches, random household items, or anything, really, that embodies this word to you. Make it colorful, if you like. Then hang it somewhere in your house or bedroom where it can inspire you and help you maintain your focus throughout the year.
My word of choice to motivate me this year is "enjoy". I want to remind myself to enjoy all the small moments as much as I would enjoy the big moments, to enjoy the small things in life, to enjoy time with loved ones, to enjoy trying new things as well as old beloved activities and to especially remind myself to enjoy pushing myself to reach my goals. If it's bettering my eating habits or trying to work out, I want to remember to look at the positive side of things and to actually enjoy them.
So here's a little DIY tutorial on how I crafted my word :)
I started out with these cardboard letters I bought. The store was out of "E"'s so I had to form an "E" out of an "I" and an "F". But that worked with some glue I had laying around the house. I had bought a pack of feathers but in the end didn't use them. Maybe they'll come in handy for my next project, who knows!
The next step was painting my letters. My boyfriend works as a painter so he was awesome and brought me some leftover paint they had at work. They didn't have black, but this dark-grey with shimmer/sparkle in it did the job just fine.
I let these letters dry on my living room table for about 48 hours.
Now this was the fun part! I got a cool spray paint that has a marble effect. I initially thought the spray paint comes out as black with the white effect in it, that's why this project took longer than expected. I had to wait for my base paint and then add the white marble effect to it. But I think it turned out awesome, I really like it! The white spray dried very quickly and I was able to set up the word in my living room today!
I hope you liked my little DIY home decor project! I'm not the craftiest person so I'm proud of this and I'm actually not ashamed of putting this up in my home for all to see.
