December 02, 2013

I discovered this Christmas tag on Fee's blog Makeup Savvy and thought I'd join in on the fun since I also love the Christmas season! Georgina from Makeup Pixi3 came up with this tag so click on both these links to check out Fee's and Georgina's answers :)

1. Do you prefer a real Christmas tree or synthetic?
Growing up (in Canada and the USA) my family always had a big, real Christmas tree. We'd go and pick it out, my Dad would somehow, with all his strength, strap it to the car and we'd bring it home. It was always a messy process since the tree would shed the whole way into the house but in the end we always had a gorgeous tree with a ton of my Mom's vintage-style decorations. Now that I live in an apartment building in Switzerland on the 7th floor (with my boyfriend and puppy) I have absolutely no desire to drag a tree up to the apartment. We don't have much space either so I bought a (green) synthetic tree last year and pulled that one out again this year and that sucker is up and decorated in 20 minutes. Beauty.

 2. You're in a coffee shop, it's December, what do you pick?
I'm not a huge coffee drinker. As in, I really almost never drink coffee since I usually have an upset stomach afterwards. If I were in a coffee shop right now, I'd most probably go for a Chai Tea Latte, either hot or cold, I love both.

3. What's your favorite color scheme for decorating the tree?
I absolutely adore my Mom's Christmas decorations, which are very vintage-like, incorporate classic colors like red and green and her ornaments are so so cute (little fuzzy bears, wooden rocking horse, etc.). Since I moved out and now decorate my own apartment, I've used the same color scheme and decorations for 2 Christmases: white and silver. I'll definitely take a few pictures of my decorations soon and post them on here if anyone needs some decorating inspiration :)

4. Giving or receiving?
Both! I think it's really fun to go out and buy my family and friends Christmas gifts, or to even make them myself. This year I'll be doing a DIY-gift for a few of my girlfriends and for my co-workers so stay tuned for that post ;) And otherwise I just really love giving gifts and cards or little hand-written notes. And obviously, I don't mind receiving a gift or two... who doesn't love a gift?

5. To mince pie or not to?
I had to giggle when I read Fee's answer to this question because for the longest time I also thought that mince pies were a pastry filled with minced meat! Finally, after seeing some commercials on British TV channels I finally understood that they are a pastry filled with fruit. But, I've never tried one so I can't say if I like them or not...

6. What's your traditional Sunday lunch?
I'm going to change this question into what we eat on Christmas Eve, since we basically celebrate Christmas on December 24th. Traditionally, I celebrate at my parents' house and eat dinner with them. We then sit by the tree, exchange gifts and enjoy the evening together. My boyfriend, puppy and I will go to my parents' in the early afternoon on the 24th and I will help my Mom make pierogi, I traditional Polish dish. My Mom usually brings the special dough from Poland and keeps it frozen until Christmas. Then, on the 24th, we form the dumplings and fill each one with homemade filling (you can use sauerkraut, potatoes and cheese, meat or fruit for a sweet version). We usually make sauerkraut dumplings on Christmas, boil the dumplings in water and top them with fried onions. In addition, we make borscht, a beetroot soup which you can drink alongside the dumplings. I like to dip my dumplings in the soup - mmhhh can't wait for Christmas!!

7. Christmas Day fashion.
My family and I dress up for Christmas Eve since we also take pictures on this evening and we just enjoy dressing fancy for the occasion. The 25th is usually spent lounging around at home so everyone's in their jammies or sweatpants. This year, my boyfriend and I will be driving to Bosnia on Christmas Day so I will definitely be dressed in sweatpants or leggings purely for comfort.

8. What's your favorite Christmas song?
I honestly don't really have a single favorite Christmas song. I like Christmas music in general, something in the likes of Michael Bublé.

9. What's your favorite Christmas film?
I've seen many different Christmas movies and I generally love all of them, but I don't have one specific movie which I traditionally watch every Christmas. But I'll definitely watch a few Christmas movies this year, probably the film Elf :)

10. Open presents before or after lunch?
As I already mentioned, we open presents in the evening on Christmas Eve. My family even used to do this when my sister and I were kids, I don't really know why. Maybe this is a Polish tradition? I remember when we'd already be in our jammies on the 24th and my parents would tell us to go upstairs and watch out the window how Santa flies by on his sleigh and while we were upstairs my Dad would bring out all the gifts and put them under the tree. Then we'd come back downstairs ooh-ing and ahh-ing at all the presents.
